What does a private caregiver do?

A private caregiver supports a family member at home with daily living: getting up and dressed, bathing, meals, medication reminders, moving around safely, appointments and companionship. Families hire caregivers for a few hours a week, full-time, overnight or live-in.

Caregivers who work in private homes often become part of the household team alongside a housekeeper, chef or driver. Medical care, such as wound care or injections, is done by licensed nurses, not caregivers.

Typical duties

How much do private caregivers make?

Caregivers are usually paid hourly; live-in roles may pay a daily or weekly rate. Pay depends on the level of care, overnight or live-in hours, certifications and the city.

When caregiver jobs with listed pay are posted on Jobinary, you will see them above. See the household staff pay guide for other roles.

What families look for

Note: some states, including California, require caregivers who work through a home care agency to be registered. Check the rules in your state.
