What does a nanny do?

A nanny is a professional caregiver who looks after a family’s children in their home, usually on a regular schedule. Unlike a babysitter, a nanny is part of the child’s daily life: keeping routines, planning activities, helping with homework, driving to school and classes, and keeping parents informed.

Roles vary a lot. A newborn care specialist focuses on the first weeks or months; a nanny/family assistant also handles errands, kids’ laundry and family scheduling; a travel or rotational nanny goes with the family on trips or works week-on, week-off.

Typical duties

How much do nannies make?

Nanny pay depends on the number and ages of children, the hours, live-in or live-out, travel and extra duties. Private nannies are paid by the hour or on an annual salary.

A manny is a male nanny. The job is the same: caring for children, routines, activities and school runs.
