What does a butler do today?

Today’s private butler is part host, part house manager. Butlers greet and look after guests, serve meals and drinks, set beautiful tables, care for silver, china, crystal, wine and wardrobes, pack and unpack for travel, and keep the front of the house running perfectly. In many homes the butler also supervises other staff, which is why so many jobs are listed as house manager/butler.

A houseman supports the butler and house manager with the heavier work of the home: moving furniture, setting up for events, cleaning windows and outdoor areas, small repairs and deliveries.
