What does a house manager do?

A house manager (also called a household manager) is the person a family trusts to run their home. In a smaller household the house manager often works hands-on, doing some housekeeping, errands and meal planning. In a larger home, the house manager leads a team of housekeepers, a chef, a nanny, a driver and outside vendors, and reports directly to the principals or their family office.

The role sits between a housekeeper and an estate manager. Estate managers usually oversee several properties, large budgets and capital projects; house managers focus on the day-to-day life of one main residence.

Typical duties

How much do house managers make?

House manager pay depends on the size of the home, the size of the staff, whether the role is live-in, and the city. Full-time house managers in major markets such as Los Angeles, New York and Miami are usually paid an annual salary rather than by the hour.
